Overseas Positions


All Madventurer and Sportventurer projects overseas are led by full-time crew, employed and trained by us in the UK. We have an ongoing recruitment programme, and are looking for high-calibre, adventurous people to fill the following positions:


Assistant Crew

Assistant Crew

This position carries some responsibility for leading a group of up to 12 venturers on an overseas project, under close supervision from an experienced Crew Leader. It is a good way to gain experience of crewing, and often leads on to the offer of a Crew Leader position.


Assistant Crew pay nothing for their place in the project team, and are provided with comprehensive travel insurance, living expenses and project related costs. International flights and Visas are at your own expense. The contract is usually for a single project, renewable subject to performance.


To apply for an Assistant Crew position, you must:

  • Be at least 21 years or age;
  • Have experience of independent travel;
  • Have demonstrable leadership experience;
  • Speak good conversational Spanish, if applying for Peru .
Preferably, you should also:
  • Have taken part in a Madventurer or Sportventurer programme, as a venturer;
  • Have worked and/or travelled in the country for which you are applying;
  • Have worked and/or travelled in the developing world.

Crew Leader

Crew Leader

The Crew Leader is directly responsible for the preparation and day-to-day running of a project for up to 12 venturers. Guidance is provided by the Regional Manager and our experienced staff in the UK Headquarters.


Crew Leaders are provided with return flights from the UK , travel visas, comprehensive travel insurance, living expenses overseas and a basic allowance. The contract is usually for six months, renewable subject to performance.


To apply for a Crew Leader position, you must:

  • Be at least 22 years of age;
  • Have considerable experience of independent travel;
  • Have experience of travelling or living in the developing world;
  • Have significant, demonstrable leadership experience;
  • Speak fluent conversational Spanish, if applying for Peru .

Preferably, you should also:

  • Be a graduate;
  • Have taken part in a Madventurer or Sportventurer programme, as Assistant Crew or as a venturer;
  • Have worked and/or travelled extensively in the country for which you are applying;

Regional Manager

Regional Manager

The Regional Manager is responsible for the overall running of operations in his or her country or group of countries, reporting directly to the Head of Overseas Operations in our UK Headquarters.


Regional Managers receive a modest salary in addition to the package given to Crew Leaders.


Regional Managers are usually people who have previously been Crew Leaders, but occasional opportunities do exist for exceptional people to apply from outside. You must:

  • Be at least 24 years of age;
  • Have considerable experience of living and working in the developing world, for which you can provide references;
  • Have significant, demonstrable leadership experience, for which you can provide references;
  • Be able to demonstrate examples of situations where you have shown initiative and lateral thinking in problem solving;
  • Have considerable experience of independent travel in the developing world;
  • Have an excellent knowledge of the culture, politics and environment of the country for which you are applying;
  • Speak fluent conversational Spanish, if applying for Peru .
Preferably, you should also:
  • Be a graduate;
  • Have worked as Crew on a Madventurer or Sportventurer programme.

You must be able to attend an interview in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in England , for which we are unfortunately unable to reimburse travel expenses.


If successful, all Assistant Crew, Crew Leaders and Regional Managers go through our residential intensive seven-day training course in the North of England. As well as comprehensive briefings on Madventurer and the projects to be crewed, this includes a 3 day Overseas Adventure first aid course, emergency response procedures, development issues, accounts and budgets, communication, Crew conduct and group leadership training.
