Having been based in Ghana since 1999 we have built up a huge number of contacts and made a lot of friends. Sportventurer is currently based at a specialist academy in Ho, a two hour drive into the hills from Accra. You will be living alongside and supporting the young academy students, helping with their all round development as well as working with other local communities. This is a unique project and for all who have taken part a very special experience.
Food and Accommodation
You will be staying in comfortable accommodation on the project. The team is likely to be split into groups of 4 or 5 and placed in different houses, but will all meet at one house to eat together. There are good beds provided with frames and mattresses. Washing facilities will range from bucket washing to overhead water containers for showers.
The main staple food of the people includes fufu, akple and banku, kenken, gorri with beans and rice.
Optional Weekend Excursions
As a Sportventurer you will have weekends free to either travel or relax. As the project is located in the Volta Region of Ghana, it is possible to travel to the coast at weekends, something not possible at other Madventurer destinations when you would have to wait until the end of the project. Ghana has some of the best beaches in Africa, isolated but with some back-packer facilities where it is possible to have a bonfire under the stars on most weekend evenings.
Mid-project Break
Mid-project break in Accra and Cocoloko:
"As a mid-season break from our 5-week stint in Liati Wote the group headed down to Accra for a night out. Our tro-tro was filled with the cheesy musical delights of Take That and Celine Dion, which made the ride down like a group audition for Stars In Their Eyes! After sampling some of the Western fast-food 'delights' on offer in Accra, off we went for a dance and a drink in a couple of the Friday night hotspots in downtown Accra. I think it is safe to say that the night was enjoyed by all after the strenuous first two weeks of our stay in Ghana! The following two days were spent in the beach resort of Cocoloko, 2 hrs drive East of Accra. This provided the perfect setting to celebrate the birthdays of Sarah (22 yrs), Jess (21 yrs) and Lucy (21 yrs), lazing on the beach, sitting round a campfire and generally recharging our batteries, ready for the second half of our stay in Liati. For myself, the highlight of the weekend was the football match we had against the local village team. Ben and I joined forces with 3 English guys teaching football to teams in Accra, to provide a solid core to the team. Ben scoring an inspired hat trick in a 5-0 win (cheered on by a vicarious following of Madventurer and local children). The trip gave the group yet another opportunity to experience more of the rural charms of Ghana!"
Mark Pearson, Sportventurer July 2003
(Who incidentally looks and plays like Peter Crouch (7ft Aston Villa Striker)- much to the amusement of the 300 children on the touchline who imitated his every move with shrieks of laughter!)
