Schule Mbahe, Mbahe Village, Marangu
Located right on the boundary of the Mt. Kilimanjaro National Park, this primary school is one of the few lucky enough to have enough space for a decent sized football field which at 1,800m the tropical weather generated by Kilimanjaro's own micro-climate and seasonal rains mean the field is covered in grass. However, typical of Africa, the children have to share their pitch with two cows - the ultimate skill is to nutmeg one in the midst of a game - and a hut selling the local brew 'mbege' or banana beer on the sidelines.
Sportventurer work in partnership with Schule Mbahe and other primary schools in the area, to provide basic football coaching to both boys and girls of all ability. Providing footballs and basic coaching tools, the coaching can involve as little or a much structure as appropriate to the situation or the skills and age of the children.
The opportunity to organize inter-school games and competitions provides a great focus and a level of excitement the children would otherwise never experience and can be one of the most rewarding and worthwhile of exercises.
Teacher Training College and Darajiani Secondary School - Marangu Mtoni
Based near the bustling junction town of Marangu Mtoni, the teacher training college is the third biggest in Tanzania. The college works in partnership with the nearby Darajiani Secondary School to allow trainee teachers an opportunity to hone their skill. Similar to Mbahe the college is lucky to have a large grassed football pitch (without the cows!) with pitch markings and proper goal posts.
Ideally, more structured and rigorous coaching with more advanced drills and routines would be employed here than would normally be used in a primary school situation. Obviously this Sportventurer project would suit those who have played at a reasonable level or who have some basic coaching experience. The Sportventurers at the Teacher Training College would also have an opportunity to teach Sports Science if applicable, as well as some Sports Theory and coaching methods.
