FOOTBALL
It's a very exciting time for football in the region, as a venturer the coaching opportunities open to you are wide and varied.
The regular morning and afternoon work is divided into weekly blocks, so as a Sportventurer you will rotate through different institutions. In the mornings, we have 2 priority primary schools for morning coaching, where venturers will take children each lesson on a class by class basis. In the afternoons, you can coach at the priority academies, which are attended by children age ranged between 8 and 22, from various schools in the local area.
This exciting project will principally involve coaching, but on the ground there are definite opportunities to add in educative tie-ins related to, for example, HIV, malaria and nutritional education. The emphasis is very much upon the venturer to design his or her own programme within this structure.
There is a big variety of coaching opportunities in this amazing region. As a Sportventurer in Uganda you will be supporting the flourishing sports in the area, helping develop its young talent and taking kit out to the enthusiastic teams. To encourage sustainability in the region Sportventurer also looks to share coaching skills with teachers and sports coaches in the region. This ensures that that children have access to quality coaching throughout the year.

Where you will work...
The Primary Schools
Kimasa Primary School [founded 1995] is located within a severely under-privileged area about 6km outside Jinja. This area has long been affected by unemployment and alcohol abuse, and is not a happy environment for children to grow up in. The school is the product of an initiative started by 3 separate villages, who decided to coordinate their efforts and make building a school their first priority. In preparation for Sportventurer's arrival they are preparing a playing field which shall act as the final structure for the school's completion. Sportventurer is very fortunate to have such a fantastic opportunity to work with a group of highly driven individuals determined to offer children a fair chance in life.
Masese Co Primary School [founded 1927] is located in one of Jinja's poorer districts about 4km outside the town centre with beautiful views out onto Lake Victoria. The local community suffered greatly in the general Ugandan decline in the 1980s. The recovery is under way and the school has around 1700 pupils, but numbers fluctuate as children choose to remain at home to help their families or, particularly in the case of orphans, to stay on the streets in the nearby slums and try to make a living. The attraction of regular sports education has the potential to entice them back to their educations, and the opportunity to play sport will greatly benefit those children already in regular attendance.
Academies
The Nile Football Academy is located at Kakindu Stadium in Jinja town centre. Initially comprising 60 young boys in the 10 - 14 age groups, the Academy been incredibly successful and now caters for children from 8 to 16 years old who attend from all around Jinja town centre after school. During the school holidays [term starts mid September and ends in early December they can often be found there all day! The Academy has also enjoyed tremendous success on the international stage. 4 of the boys and one coach were chosen to represent the Uganda U13 team who won the World Youth Championships in Gothenburg Sweden. NFA have also created ties with Clubs such as Charlton Athletic, Manchester City and Inter Milan who have been to visit the academy in Uganda. As a Sportventurer in Uganda you will be supporting this flourishing academy, helping develop its young talent and taking kit out to the enthusiastic teams.
The Bugenbe Football Academy is located at the Bugenbe Stadium on the outskirts of Jinja at the hub of numerous underprivileged communities. Like the Nile Academy its numbers are flourishing and it serves as a superb vehicle with which to bring sports coaching out to more rural areas in Uganda. Its pupils span the ages of 9 to 20, and some are supported through secondary school by bursaries from local benefactors. While there is undoubted talent here, its increasing numbers mean there is always more to be unlocked and as a Sportventurer you can help give children from these communities the opportunity to develop their skills and show what they can do.
Other partners
The Jinja Network manages various centres for street children in and around Jinja. One of these, the Adolescent Development Support Network [ADSN], is a 'drop-in' centre that counsels teenagers and drug abusers. You have a great opportunity to play football and see the benefit that an organized structure can bring to these children's lives. The ADSN is one of a number of similar institutions that you as a Sportventurer in Uganda will have the opportunity to work with.
Spire Road Primary School has 26 students with visual impairments, some of whom have no sight at all. They play various sports that cater for their needs such as handball and athletics but would relish the opportunity to play football. At present the school does not have the resources to coach its other students properly, let alone those with visual impairments. This is one of a number of opportunities that you as a Sportventurer in Jinja will be able to work with, should you wish to do so.
