HOCKEY FIJI
Where We Play
Our Sportventurer program is based in Suva, the laid-back capital of Fiji and the largest city in the South Pacific. Suva is situated on a hilly peninsula in the South East of Viti Levu, the biggest of Fiji’s 300 or so islands. A multi-racial, almost cosmopolitan city, Suva has plenty of shops, internet cafes, gyms, sporting facilities, restaurants, a few bars and a cinema.
Suva is warm all year-round, with the hottest months being from December to March. These also tend to be the rainier months, but tropical showers can happen any time, to keep the palm trees looking lush and green!
Hockey is played only in certain districts of Fiji but has a motivated & organised set up along with world-class facilities on the doorstep of the S.V. house. All schools that we work at are keen to promote hockey and our venturers provide the perfect opportunity to do just that, as well as giving venturers the opportunity to work with a range of ages and abilities.
Training and playing with a team can be done at the national (water based Astroturf) hockey pitch; 10 min walk from the house. Better players may be promoted to the Eastern district squad. Training for clubs and the Eastern district start at the end of February/early March.
Following consultation with FASANOC (Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee) and the national sporting bodies, we have been able to implement a number of schemes which aim to provide a more structured and comprehensive program of sports coaching within schools in the region. We have worked with over 10 schools in Suva, both primary and secondary as well as some adult clubs, and a couple of rural villages further away. We have provided hockey coaching both during PE lessons and after school training for the teams. There may be opportunities to coach other sports, depending on the season and your interests.
There will be 2 coaching sessions a day most days, with the possibility to train with a local team some evenings during the week, and even play for them on a Saturday if you are good enough. Please bear in mind though that coaching may be unavoidably cancelled due to rain or random school events such as dance practice, school trips or they have just decided not to train that day! The Fijians have a wonderful way of taking each day as it comes and this can extend to not mentioning school will be closed for our next coaching session!
There will also be the opportunity to stay in a rural village for one weekend, to experience traditional Fijian life away from the developed city of Suva. You will stay with a family and join in with daily life, as well as providing coaching (mainly rugby and netball) for adults and children.
To provide a sustainable and expanding sports program in the region, it is our intention to provide not only coaching to children, but also to share coaching skills and techniques with teachers and sports coaches in the region, enabling them to continue and develop the program.
Accommodation
While on your placement you will be living in the Sportventurer house in the suburbs of Suva. You will be sharing a room with up to 6 others, with communal areas for chilling out after coaching and training. The house will have electricity, TV, hot showers and a well equipped kitchen. You will need an Australasian adaptor for any electrical items you intend to plug in.
Meals will be a team effort cooked on a rota basis using a mix of local and Western food. There may also be a local cook to give you a taste of local dishes. There will always be plenty of food in the house, and although it may not be exactly what you are used to, you’ll never go hungry.
At weekends there will be the opportunity to leave Suva and visit some of the islands and beaches that Fiji is famous for. As Fiji is a tourist destination, there are plenty of activities on offer, such as diving, jet skiing, kayaking and snorkeling, or you could choose to get down to some serious relaxation on a beach.
Dates and Prices
Sportventurer is unique in the way that it runs. Rather then set dates we operate in the following: We ask that you come out and devote your time for a minimum of 4 weeks. However after that you can add on as many weeks as you would like.
