NETBALL FIJI

<<Take part in international netball tournaments in Fiji Summer 2006 & 2007>>

Where We Play
Our Sportventurer program is based in Suva, the laid-back capital of Fiji and the largest city in the South Pacific. Suva is situated on a hilly peninsula in the South East of Viti Levu, the biggest of Fiji’s 300 or so islands. A multi-racial, almost cosmopolitan city, Suva has plenty of shops, internet cafes, gyms, sporting facilities, restaurants, a few bars and a cinema.

Suva is warm all year-round, with the hottest months being from December to March. These also tend to be the rainier months, but tropical showers can happen any time, to keep the palm trees looking lush and green!

A popular sport in Fiji that is widely played, Sportventurer coaches have the potential to coach at all of the schools that we are involved with as well as having the opportunity to train and play at FijiÌs FMF dome (national pitch), a superb facility that was built for the south Pacific games in 2003.

Fiji is due to host the world MenÌs & Mixed tournament in 2007 and so Netball Fiji is in the process of gearing up for the event. Pre-season starts in February with the league fixtures starting in March.

Following consultation with FASANOC (Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee) and the national sporting bodies, we have been able to implement a number of schemes which aim to provide a more structured and comprehensive program of sports coaching within schools in the region. We have worked with over 10 schools in Suva, both primary and secondary as well as some adult clubs, and a couple of rural villages further away. We have provided netball coaching both during PE lessons and after school training for the teams. There may be opportunities to coach other sports, depending on the season and your interests.

There will be 2 coaching sessions a day most days, with the possibility to train with a local team some evenings during the week, and even play for them on a Saturday if you are good enough. Please bear in mind though that coaching may be unavoidably cancelled due to rain or random school events such as dance practice, school trips or they have just decided not to train that day! The Fijians have a wonderful way of taking each day as it comes and this can extend to not mentioning school will be closed for our next coaching session!

There will also be the opportunity to stay in a rural village for one weekend, to experience traditional Fijian life away from the developed city of Suva. You will stay with a family and join in with daily life, as well as providing coaching (mainly rugby and netball) for adults and children.

To provide a sustainable and expanding sports program in the region, it is our intention to provide not only coaching to children, but also to share coaching skills and techniques with teachers and sports coaches in the region, enabling them to continue and develop the program.

Accommodation

While on your placement you will be living in the Sportventurer house in the suburbs of Suva. You will be sharing a room with up to 6 others, with communal areas for chilling out after coaching and training. The house will have electricity, TV, hot showers and a well equipped kitchen. You will need an Australasian adaptor for any electrical items you intend to plug in.

Meals will be a team effort cooked on a rota basis using a mix of local and Western food. There may also be a local cook to give you a taste of local dishes. There will always be plenty of food in the house, and although it may not be exactly what you are used to, you’ll never go hungry.

At weekends there will be the opportunity to leave Suva and visit some of the islands and beaches that Fiji is famous for. As Fiji is a tourist destination, there are plenty of activities on offer, such as diving, jet skiing, kayaking and snorkeling, or you could choose to get down to some serious relaxation on a beach.

INTERNATIONAL NETBALL TOURNAMENTS!

Take part in international netball tournaments in Fiji Summer 2006 & 2007

As well as continuing our amazing work with local schools, community groups and clubs at a grassroots level, over the next two summers Sportventurers will be able to get first hand experience of organizing international netball tournaments working alongside the world's top international players.

The summer of 2006 will see Fiji hosting a big international netball tournament in the build up to the women's world championships to be held there in 2007.  This international sporting battle will hold women's, men's, mixed and U23s tournaments, including eager champions from Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Tonga, Samoa, Papua New Guinea, Cook Islands and, of course, Fiji.   It promises to deliver lots of exciting games for you to get actively involved in.

The dates of the tournament will run from 18th - 26th of August 2006, which is a school holiday in Fiji, so the perfect time for Sportventurers to get involved.  The strong partnership’s that we have means that as well as sitting back to watch the talent from courtside, you will be able to help as support staff or, for those who are qualified technical staff, you may be able to help with scoring, time keeping, etc.

Then in 2007, Fiji is hosting the World Women's Championships! There will be 16 teams competing between the 10th - 21st of July, where teams will fight for top-spot and you will be able to see first-hand the best netball players from across the world and again get hands on experience of helping to run the tournament.

Both championships will be held at the striking world class FMF dome, which was built for the 2003 south pacific games and overlooks the beautiful island beaches just 10mins walk from the madhouse where you’ll be living.
