Basketball is one of the fastest growing sports in Fiji and SportVenturer are offering a unique opportunity to get involved with the Fiji Amateur Basketball Federation coaching schools in Fiji through to national tournaments where your team will compete to be national champions.
Schools in Fiji are crying out for basketball coaches with about 40 different schools competing in some big tournaments this summer. Working closely in cooperation with Fiji Amateur Basketball Federation we are hoping to deliver some excellent coaching clinics combining the skills of our Sportventurer coaches and those of the FABF in both schools and clubs in the build up to this summer's tournaments.
The FABF have already been working with Sportventurer to bring basketball coaching to the Sportventurer schools we work with on a daily basis. They have been lending us their equipment and you will have the opportunity to develop your own coaching programme with their support.
Interest in basketball means that we need more experience basketball players and coaches to come and get involved. SportVenturers will be able to create their own timetable, coaching both in our current schools and by being fully involved in the FABF programme.
With the backing of expertise and equipment from the FABF, the coaching clinics will provide a lasting and sustainable impact on the development of the game and hopefully inspire the next generation of basketball players in Fiji.
As well as a busy coaching schedule there will the opportunity to train and play with 2 clubs near our house, the Suva and Rewanqa teams.
Many secondary schools have requested Athletics coaching during term 1 (Jan, Feb, March), and primary schools during term 3 (Sept, Oct, Nov) due to local and national tournaments at these times. This year our coaches are turning their hand to athletics with great success. The athletics organisation is able to offer IAAF recognised athletics coaching courses year round, coaches must complete a 3-day itinerary then show competency in athletics coaching to an assessor before being issued their certificate. It may be ideal to combine Athletics and Swimming when visiting in terms 1 or 3.
Water polo has recently started in Suva and is being organised by staff from the national aquatic centre and international school. They are in the process of starting an official organisation and would really appreciate any help that can be offered. Water polo could be offered as an extra to do alongside another sport. CRICKET FIJI
Our Sportventurer cricket coaches team up with development officers from the ICC organisation, delivering sessions in schools, running coaching clinics and tournaments (also at weekends and during holidays). Cricket coaches can also team up with trips to our regular schools providing ‘quick cricket sessions’. There are plenty of opportunities to train and play here in Suva; nets sessions are nightly at Albert Park and are open to players from all teams, which creates a nice social interaction between all cricketers, it also allows new players to find a team easily. League games on Saturdays.
The season runs from Nov - April and in this time venturers can both play for a team and also do a lot of cricket coaching. Sportventurer has set up close connections with the ICC in Fiji which means the scope is huge to get really involved with promoting this fantastic sport across these beautiful islands. [Need more Info] Venturers can also do their level 1 coaching exam whilst they are here which adds a great incentive to improve their all round knowledge of the game. The ITF (international tennis federation) admit that the main problem in the South Pacific is making tennis available to all kids, and the best way to do this is through school programs which strikes something of a staffing problem here; this is where Sportventurer comes in, the ITF will provide our coaches with “mini tennis” equipment in-order that we can take tennis to our schools. Sportventurer Tennis coaches will run this mini tennis program and will also have the opportunity to help at the ITF centre in Lautoka (higher level (qualified) coaches).
The ITF (international tennis federation) has a scholarship scheme across the whole of the south pacific where young players with potential are funded by the ITF to live, train and study in Lautoka, Fiji, at a purpose built facility, many successful graduates from the scheme earn further scholarships to study at American universities. The great thing about the scheme is that kids from poor or geographically remote backgrounds can earn the opportunity to achieve much higher goals in their life (so that it’s not just about tennis).
