FOOTBALL PERU
Where we play
3400m above sea level in the Andes mountains, Cuzco was once the centre of the great Inca Empire and is home to some 300,000 people. The city attracts a great deal of tourism – not least as the base for getting to the Inca Trail and the ruined Inca city of Machu Picchu - but the narrow cobbled streets and local craft markets still retain all of their traditional charm.
You don’t have to go far from Cuzco to find yourself in villages where little has changed in the last hundred years. People in traditional Peruvian dress still farm the fields with ox-drawn ploughs and donkeys as the main rural transport. Despite the income parts of the region receive from tourism, many of these small villages remain very poor, Sportventurer in these areas can help provide the children with new experiences and help contribute towards sports and youth development within the local communities
Sportsventurer in Cusco will focus on coaching football and volleyball. This can be done in local schools or in children’s homes in Cusco city. The homes are for abandoned children – most of which are in the homes because they have been abandoned for reasons of extreme poverty, alcoholism or abuse within the family.
Sportventurer gives the chance for children we work with to do something active and enjoyable with someone who has a real passion for sport, like you. Playing sport will help develop and build self-esteem in these children who often think very little of themselves and at the same time will help enhance skills and talents from the player within. Remember sport is a universal language and one that can be used to deliver so many positive messages as part of a tool for development.
Coaching will require a certain level of Spanish, a whole load of enthusiasm and a dash of patience, if you can bring this to Sportventurer then you will gain a lot from the experience but more importantly the kids will benefit from having a fun, keen and dedicated person like yourself to coach them a sport they love.
Just remember these four questions, when in Peru and you’ll never go wrong:
“What is your name”
“How old are you”
“Do you have a boyfriend/girlfriend”
AND THE BIG ONE “What football team do you support”
Accommodation
You will be living in a rented house alongside Gap Jobs venturers, located in the centre of Cuzco, just four blocks from the Plaza de Armas (the main square in the city). It is the perfect base from which to explore this vibrant and exciting city, and ideally located for our placement locations which are just a short walk or taxi ride away.
You will share the house with our Sportventurer/Gap Jobs crew leaders who will oversee your placement, and provide you with all the support and guidance you need to get the most from your placement.
