FOOTBALL UGANDA
Where We Play
Our Uganda projects are based in Jinja region, where the source of the Nile begins from Lake Victoria. Jinja is a spacious, relaxed town which has all amenities a volunteer may need. The local transport is matatu’s (small mini buses) and boda-boda’s – bicycles or small motorcycles. Jinja is about an hour and a half away from Kampala, Uganda’s vibrant, bustling capital city.
The weather can be hot and humid during the day all year round. The rainy seasons are from March until May/June; and Sept/Oct - November
We have worked closely with the Jinja District Authority, in particular the Sports, Education and Special Needs departments, to develop a number of links with various institutions based in and around Jinja and to construct a variety of options for Sportventurers to choose from when they arrive.
The work that Sportventurers have the option of doing in Jinja can be divided into four principal areas:
The regular morning and afternoon work will be divided into weekly blocks, allowing each Sportventurer to rotate through different institutions. We have 2 priority primary schools for morning coaching, where venturers will take children each lesson on a class by class basis.
We have 2 priority academies for the afternoons. These academies are attended by children from various schools in the local area, and have an age range of around 8 to 22. We also have links to various institutions that cater for orphans, street children and children with special needs.
This work will principally entail coaching, but there will be opportunities to be involved in other educational areas such as HIV, malaria and nutritional awareness. To further promote sport in the region you can also organize tournaments or even set up a local league.
Our placements are centred around football, but there is also the opportunity to coach netball in schools and at an academy. Volleyball, rugby, athletics, cricket and even karate can be launched with enough enthusiasm and perseverance should a venturer have a passion for any one of these sports.
To encourage sustainability in the region Sportventurer also looks to share coaching skills with teachers and sports coaches in the region to ensure that children have access to quality coaching throughout the year.
Accommodation
Whilst on your placement you will stay in the Sportventurer house in Jinja along with the Gap Job venturers. The house is secure and will act as your base throughout the placement. Sportventurer will employ a cook to provide meals. These will be local dishes, and you will quickly realize what your favourites are!
